How to compressed videos in low size?

Many of us want to reduce the size of our video files to free up some disk space on our hardrive so I have a way for reducing the size of your video with effecting its performance.

“What is Lossless Compression?”

Essentially lossless video compression uses algorithms to compress the data from a video in such a way that it can be restored to its original form. The way in which this is done is through the use of ‘codecs’ – which is a term that you may have encountered in the past.
Over the years video codecs have been steadily improving, with each new generation offering better compression ratios (i.e. the amount by which the original data can be reduced). Today there are several codecs that offer lossless video compression and compression ratios that will reduce the file size of 4k or HD videos by 3 to 6 times their original size.

How to Use Lossless Compression on a Video

If you want to use lossless compression on a video, the first thing that you’ll need is a software that will let you convert and encode videos. Most video editors are able to do so, as are video converters. The one thing that you need to look out for when choosing the software that you want to use is that it supports the format and codec that you intend to use to compress your video.
The choice of format and codec is what is important when compressing a video. Right now there are the three codecs that are often used for lossless compression are:
  • H265
Often described as the best lossless compression in use today, H265 generally compresses HD video of 720p or 1080p as well as 4k video to a sixth of its size. That being said because of how new it is as well as its requirements, it is often incompatible with many older devices, operating systems and platforms. It uses MKV or MP4 formats.
  • VP9
Essentially the main alternative to H265, VP9 is also a new codec and it mirrors H265 in terms of performance. Just as H265 it can compress HD video of 720p or 1080p and 4k video to a sixth of its size, and there really isn’t that much that separates both these codecs. Because of how new it is compatibility is often an issue as well and uses MKV or WebM fromats.
  • H264
As you can guess from its name, H264 is the codec that preceded H265 – but its widespread compatibility has resulted in it still being the most popular lossless compression. In terms of performance it can’t match H265 or VP9 and compresses HD video of 720p or 1080p and 4k video to about a third of their original size. It can use many different formats, including MP4, MKV, AVI, 3GP, FLV, MPG and so on.
To compress your video using lossless compression you need to choose which of these codecs you want to use – taking into account their compatibility. After that you can use a video converter such as Movavi Video Converter to convert and encode your video into the format and codec that you wish to use.
